Totem Skin - Weltschmerz

Totem Skin is a five piece band made up of, Glenn Zettersten - Vocals. Henrik Dahlqvist - Vocals. Christoffer Öster - Guitar. Sebastian Engström - Drums. Johan Wiberg - Bass. Music style is listed as, Fast, Heavy, Atmospheric. Band location, Falun/Borlänge.

Weltschmerz album to be released on Halo Of Flies March 4th 2016. Prepare to have your face melted. An abrasive and chaotic force is unleashed. Grinds that bring pure punishment and direct contact. Think of bands like, Unrest, Disrupt, Napalm Death and Brutal Truth. These are seven tremendous and destructive songs with great production. Killer drum sound and intense guitar distortion. Some dissonant chords are thrown in for layering, adding more to the dimension of the sound. For example, the song "Pretend", has a particular fill in the middle that I really enjoyed. Starting slow and mellow, then building up steadily to the brink of climactic fury.

Final thoughts, the band brings full aggression with every song and they add enough dynamic structure to keep the music engaging and interesting to the listener.

APATHY NOIR - Across Dark Waters

Apathy Noir is a two piece band made up of, Viktor Jonas (All Instruments), Vidar Wetterhall (Vocals/Lyrics). Music style is listed as, Melodic Doom/Death Metal. Band location, Sweden.

Across Dark Waters album to be released on Artnoir Productions February 12, 2016. My first impression, intense, deep and moving. The initial track "Beyond The Sea", sets a gloomy path that will leads us into the void of no return. Good production, every instrument is well defined and comes through perfectly. The keyboard pieces are mesmerizing and capture the dark essence they are projecting to the listener. A mixture of low growl vocalization and also singing is well spread out through every composition. Some of the influence that may be noted would be bands like, Torrens Conscientium, Infestum and Sentenced. The band offers us seven long tracks. Some of my favorites would have to be, "Lure of the Sirens", with sorrowful and oppressive sounds, it is a song that can be played over and over and you would not get tire of it. "Death of Hope" is another track worth mentioning. Filled with powerful double bass drums and melodic riffing. It captivates the thoughts of long and sad journeys.

Final thoughts, hymns that penetrate the deep crevices of the mind. Rooted in the doom genre but adding a melodic touch that reflects an extra layer of sound exploration for both novice and frequent listeners of the genre.

Sorrow Plagues - Sorrow Plagues

Sorrow Plagues is a one man band made up of, David Lovejoy - All Instruments. Music style is listed as, Atmospheric/Post-Rock/Black Metal. Band location, UK.

Sorrow Plagues album self released on February 8, 2016. My first impression, intense and atmospheric. The keyboard arrangements are the most dominant factors through out the album. A deep and adventurous journey is presented with long melodic passages. By far the most captivating song from this release would be "Redemption", this is an epic soundscape. A monumental sonic atmosphere with slow and moving melodies that eventually climax into a powerful ending. The opening song "Fade", is another track worth mentioning for its persistent intensity and keeping the listener engaged for the rest of the album.

Final thoughts, this album offers many realms of exploration. The melodic passages are well written and the music remains interesting from beginning to end. Fans of Dissection, Atra Vetosus, Path of Destiny and Thorns of Sin will want to add this debut album to their collection.

Ghost Horizon - Astral Possession

Ghost Horizon is a two piece band consisting of, Daniel Stollings - Guitars/Bass. Uræus - Vocals/Drums/Additional Music. Genre described as Melodic/Atmospheric Black Metal.
Band origin, Phoenix, AZ.

Astral Possession EP to be self released on 26 February 2016. To my unsuspecting ears, this music really found its way into my head. Cryptic and malevolent choruses with catchy melodies. I enjoy the way these song are epic and compelling. These musicians are able to keep things intense and brutal while maintaining comprehensible passages and catchy rhythms. Although short, the songs deliver good quality. I would have to say my favorite track is "Spectral Trenody", I enjoy the way the blast beats and vocal delivery come in, its a song that makes you want to keep it on repeat. To be honest, all the songs have a lot to offer, great arrangements and solos.

In conclusion, fans of black metal will definitely enjoy this release, but there is enough variety in the writing style that anyone that's into metal can take something from it.

Tragacanth - Anthology of the East

Tragacanth is a five piece band consisting of, Erik Brouwer - Guitar, Bass, Vocals. Jasper van Minnen - Drums, Lyrics. OqPe Bune - Guitars. Terry Stooker - Vocals, Lyrics. Mark Oosterbaan - Bass. Genre described as Black/Death Metal. Band origin Nederland.

Anthology of the East album to be released on Loud Rage Music March 4 2016. My first thoughts on this album are, epic and destructive. Containing some powerful keyboard compositions complimented by devastating guitar riffs and demonic vocals. A perfect combination of high to low guttural vocals. Some of the bands that may be noted as an influence would be Dissection, At The Gates, early Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth. This promo also provided a lyric video for the song Edimmu which is a nice perk to get including the music. This song quickly became one of my favorites. With a haunting melody and cryptic passages, it is sure to please many ears. Another song worth noting "The First Noble Truth" this track came forth prominently. Its opening is monumental, like a mid evil soundtrack, when the heavy music comes in, it absolutely crushes the senses.

In conclusion, this is probably one of the best new releases I have listen to in 2016. If you like melodic, heavy, epic black/death metal, then look no further, this is your band.

Show Me Wolves - The World They Took Over

Show Me Wolves is a one man band consisting of Hörður Lúðvíksson. Genre described as Metal, Black/Deathmetal, Prog, Metalcore. Band origin Reykjavík.

The World They Took Over album released on False Beings Productions January 16, 2016. To my unsuspecting ears the intro to this album was a nice surprise. It reminded me of a soundtrack you might find in an early 70's horror film. Haunting and captivating. When the music starts you automatically know its going to be intense black metal. Composing all the melodies within the chaos is no easy task, but he manages to mix it all together in magnificent way. The song"Mother" is an interesting piece musically. The dissonant scales and vocals steer away from the black metal style and steadily become more progressive as you listen. Honestly, it is a good variety to have and shows the level of talent this musician has. My favorite track from this release would have to be "Exit The Realm Of The Living", it is a powerful song that is both cryptic and memorable, it is one of those songs that you can listen to over and over again and never get tired of it.

In conclusion, this album will please most black metal fans and there is enough melodies to keep things interesting for other listeners. The World They Took Over, is a must for your collection.

Foret D' Orient - Venetia

Foret D' Orient is a five piece band consisting of, Emiliano Rigon (Drums/Keys/Lyrics)- Marco Barolo (Bass/Keys/Lyrics) - Sonia Dainese (Harp) - Roberto Catto (Vocals). Genre described as Melodic Black Metal, Classical, Folk. Band origin, Italy.

Venetia album released on Visionaire Records 5 January 2016. My first thoughts are, epic and classical. The merging of brutality with progressive and melodic elements. On this release the band offers us six songs to mesmerize our thoughts with memorable and complex compositions. A combination of classical modes and orchestral atmospheres. The song "Sogno De Vis", begins with a moderate pace then slows into a catchy and memorable clean strumming guitar along with some captivating clean vocals. My absolute favorite song would have to be "Dominio Da Mar", entirely played on strings and keys. The melody is one that can slowly creep into your mind and enthralled you with its magnificence.

In conclusion, if you want to experience an adventure filled with heavy orchestral phrases and melodic interludes then you will want to add this to your collection.

Sunless Rise - Unrevealed

Sunless Rise is a five piece band consisting of Kirill Ershov – Vocal, Alex Becker – Guitar, Sergey Shulzhenko – Keyboards, Evgeniy Kasitsyn – Bass, Alexey Mallovsky – Drums. Genre described as Technical Melodic Metal. Band origin, Russia

Unrevealed album self released on November 30, 2015. My first impression, these are highly involved musicians. The music on this release sounds very progressive and melodic right from the start. Complex arrangements and elaborate compositions can be heard between the guitars and keyboards. Sometimes, it reminded me of Dream Theater. The song "Awakening", is a good example of trading  passages from keys to guitar. The melodies come at you lightning fast with superior double kicks powering the main rhythms. Personally, when bands add to many scales and progressions, it could be a bit much for novice listeners, however on this album the band does it just enough to keep things interesting while maintaining the groove of the songs. There is also a good amount of clean vocals and I think some people may or may like it but, I think it fits perfectly and compliments the music in a good way. Not to fear, they also have some great low guttural death metal vocals too, to round out the album and give it some balance. The track "Recovering The Truth", is a good example of both style presented in a devastating manner.

In conclusion, the album has much to offer for both melodic progressive fans as well as those who enjoy a more brutal approach to their music. All the songs are powerful and pack many elements of the metal styles for everyone to enjoy.

Mare Infinitum - Alien Monolith God

Mare Infinitum is a two member band consisting of, Homer - Guitars, Bass, Programming and Ivan Guskov - Vocals. Genre described as Atmospheric Doom/Death Metal. Band origin Russia.

Alien Monolith God album released on April 21, 2015 Solitude Productions. This is the bands second release and it delivers some powerful new hymns of pure doom and destruction. Exploring space and its vast mysteries is the main goal and they do it well. Five monumental tracks consisting of keyboards, low to high vocals, heavy distorted guitars, low tuned. Great sounding drums followed with a solid and powerful bass tones. You can also hear some chorus lines of dual vocals like in the song "The Sun That Harasses My Solitude", which also happens to be my favorite from this release. The album is a true escape and does not get boring at all. It manages to captivate your thoughts with melancholy rhythms and experimental passages. The other track that really stood out to me was the title song "Alien Monolith God", it builds up slowly then smashes you in the face with some powerful low vocals. It creates a long journey at almost fifteen minutes long but, it is definitely worth the ride.

In conclusion, the music contains many layers of exploration, while it is doom metal, it definitely has it own characteristics and should be investigated further to achieve the mass appeal it deserves.

Thulnar - Nightfall in Theros

Thulnar is a two piece band consisting of Darken (Diego Vacchiano) - all musics & lyrics. Elric Blackcrow - vocals. Genre described as Extreme Fantasy Metal. Band origin Bologna, Italy.

Nightfall in Theros EP released on January 13 2015. My first thoughts, the musicianship is at high levels. At times it sounds like there are six musicians composing all this material. As the genre describes, it certainly feels like been transported back in time to a mid evil era. The songs are well arranged and it is easy to get involved in the adventures the melodies are creating. Out of all three tracks my favorite would have to be "City of The Golden Halls", the chorus of vocals and heavy double bass kicks are interesting and the guitar melodies are very catchy and captivating.

In conclusion, for such a short release the band manages to keep you intent and interested through out each song. Hoping to hear more from this band in 2016. If you like melodic and adventurous metal then look no further.

Thy Worshiper - Ozimina

Thy Worshiper is a six piece band consisting of Vocal & guitar:Marcin Gasiorowski, Bass: Krystian Mazur, Accustic & electric guitar: Dariusz Kubala, Drums: Bartosz Maruszak, Percussion and ethnic instruments: Grabaż, Female Vocals: Anna Malarz. Genre described as Tribal Metal. Band origin Wroclaw.

Ozimina album released on September, 15 2015 Arachnophobia Records. My first impression, eclectic, mellow and atmospheric. Musically, there is an overabundance of sounds. Every tracks contains its own individual characteristic. The passages keep the listener in trance and captivated. The song "Halny" is a good example of mesmerizing tones with enchanting female vocals by Anna Malarz. The song "Ożyny" is certain to rise your spirits. Its feeling is monumental and I ended up playing this one several times because is that good. The subtle build up in the song "Wietlica", is both beautiful and filled with positive energy. The guitar melody makes this one of my favorites from this release. There are a few metal oriented riffs such as in the track "Wśród cieni i mgieł", but they are kept to a minimal amount.

In conclusion, the band manages to capture the essence of nature elements through out its entirety. If you like music with many paths to explore then you will want to add this one to your collection.
