Russian Death Metal Vol. 5

Symbol Of Domination, Armaada Art, American Line, Sevared Records and Darknagar Records present this massive release featuring eighteen extreme death metal bands from Russia.

The opening band is The Mutilator, "Decent Elimination", with a name like that you know its going to be intense. They surely deliver aggression, surprisingly there is a clean melodic riff that comes out of nowhere and its a nice touch. Next we have, House of The Butcher, with blasting double kicks and blistering speed, they waste no time crushing the senses. Band number three are called Contrabandist with the song "Fat Fitness", brutal and potent, the bass lines really stand out and its a great song to jam to. Number four is the band Brainteasers, the song is "Little Fucker Factor", guttural and massive is my first impression, maybe not as fast as the previous bands, but, I think that's what makes them stand out. Number five is the band Cane Will Rise with the song "Born in Sand", low to high death metal vocals and massive double kick drums are presented with menacing force, great production too, I definitely played this one several times. Number six is the band Embodied Deception with the track "Playing With Your Mind", catchy riffs and very potent vocal attack, no shortage of brutality here, the solo in this song delighted my ears. In short, pure intensity and delivery of aggression. Number seven is the band Corvus Lives Again with the song "Shail", a dual vocal attack is noticeable at the onset, catchy riffs and strong bass lines are expressed with precision, a definite stand out from this compilation. Number eight is the band The Faceless Hunter, and their song "The Prophet", certainly different opening to this compare to the previous bands. I will have to say that this is a more progressive composition and is a bit technically in writing style. Number nine is the band Rotting Butcher with"Eaten By Sakhalin", my first impression is the embodiment of classic death metal style, simple yet devastating and catchy. Next band is Unplexiety with "Extreme Reality",  complex riffs fill my ears. An exciting mix of progression and brutality, I will be definitely looking for more music by this band. There's a lot happening in this song, very proficient musicians indeed. Number eleven is Marble Carrion with "Vitoria", extreme guttural sample, imaging someone is meeting their end, then the music hits and it just comes in with pure velocity, punishing sounds at every turn, its worthy of playing this track several times, crushing. Number twelve is Rage Of Kali with "With Clusters Stand Divides", a punishing assault with penetrating riffs, low gutturals will send chills down your spine. Next is number thirteen Poghost with "The Dicktator", compare to the past few bands, these guys are raw. Next up is number fourteen, Teodolit with "Blood Soaked Revenge", another dual vocal attack, blistering drums heavy bass tones and punishing guitar riffs, spin this one several times. Number fifteen is the band 602 with "Axes", wishing the drums could be more audible but not a huge deal, I like the solos and creative bass lines. Next is number sixteen the band The Serpent and The Rainbow, with their song "Seeker", an interesting mix with keyboards and a mix of high vocals and gutturals, certainly a welcome change compared to the previous bands. Number eighteen is The Nameless with "The Last Word", a much different approach taking from the classic dm style of early nineties, its fiiting and easy to get into. Finally we have Bridge To Infinity, the song is "The Storm Is Coming", progressive riffs and melodic passage are a welcome to my ears after listening to a monument of heavy tones, this is well executed and features some nice melodies mix with brutality. ~Artemortifica

Very well produced. The melodic parts combined with dual vocals are a good blend. You can hear it in songs like "Along Came Disruption" and "Fragmented". The band has crafted a very defined process to their method of writing with this album. And overall it is well executed.

In conclusion, building on a long span of music since 1993, this new record delivers powerful songs that are both supremely heavy and melodic at the same time.

Evil Nerfal - Bellum Est Pater Omnium

Evil Nerfal is a black metal band from Colombia.
Website facebook-EvilNerfal Album released through Grimm Distribution and Morbid Skull records.

Bringing us closer to the void. Bellum Est Pater Omnium is an album featuring ten tracks.
The amount of melodic and technical riffs in this release is impressive. Yes, definitely black metal at its roots, but the more you listen the more convinced of the complexity of music arrangements. You can clearly hear it in the song  "En las Fauces del Demonio" it is very evident that these are very talented musicians. Let's chat about drums.
With the majority of songs, the drum keep up with great intensity and offer interesting fills to keep you on your toes. The band had a previous album in 2016 that is also worth checking out.

In conclusion, if you want brutal and dark than look no further.

Taiga - Cosmos

Taiga is a two piece band, members are Nikolay Seredov - Vocals, guitar and drums. Alexey Korolev Keyboards. Music style is listed as, depressive black metal.
Band location, Russia. Visit the band at this location.

Cosmos album released Final Gate Records. A force to be reckon with. The music is powerful and well arranged. This project featuring only two memebers delivers a massive amount of materail and imagination. At melodic and at chaotic. This volitile chemistry
is stiched together perfectly and wraps its sonic tentacles deep inside the mind. Songs like "Религия мёртвых" and "Космос" are perfect examples of  this expression. Production quality is very good. A cohesive and well produced album. Vocals are most certainly depressive and have a way of delivering a certain anguish and pain to every song within.

In conclusion, a journey through the abyss. Pain and suffering expressed through chaotic hymns that deliver an impact.

Bestialord - Law Of the Burning

Bestialord is a three piece band from Wichita Kansas, members are Mark Anderson - Guitar & Vox, Rob Harris - Bass, Chris Johnson - Drums
Music style is listed as, Occult Horror Metal. Visit the band at this location

Law of Burning album released on CSR and Symbol Of Domination. Featured here are nine tracks that will haunt your mind. The classic tones of early metal can be heard profoundly in each composition. Living up to the expection layed out in the description
'Occult Horror", the music will make you feel like you have been transported into one of many classic horror films like a menacing Dario Argento Suspiria or John Carpenter The Thing. Some of the stand out songs for me would be "All Fall Down" and "I am Pain".
Don't expect a clean polished production here, it is more of a raw and grit recording, which is a perfect fit for the intent of the sound. Heavy bass lines and some awesome lead guitar riffs. The vocals are well understood, which is something I prefer. Its a great thing to
be able to understand the lyric content without having to decipher through a bunch of growls.

In conclusion, the theme and delivery is established withing the first few songs and made crystal clear. Raw and relentless power that goes well with any of
your favorite horror films.

La Danse Macabre album released on Satanath Records. Ten songs of punishing intensity.
Creating an atmosphere of dark roads and distant voids, the music delivers compositions with elaborate keyboard pieces. Songs like "My Journey to Death" and "Eternal Winter" are a perfect example of the mix with brutal riffs and melodic arrangements. The song "Back To The Dust", is one of my favorites from this release. A well thought out expression of sorrow and deep sadness. They end this album with the song K.I.N.G. which happens to be a Satyricon cover and they do a great performance of it.

In conclusion, a journey of obscure dark voids and sad melodic expressions. I would definitely recommend this to any listener of the old school as well as younger generation of metalheads.

Neter - Inferus

Neter is a four piece band from Spain, members are Manuel Gestoso: Vocals & Guitars, Andrés Rosales: Bass,  Manuel Sánchez: Guitars, Luis Ruiz: Drums
Music style is listed as, death metal.

From the moment I heard the first riffs I was drawn in right away. The music is well planned and delivered in a brutal form. Catchy and melodic arrangements can be heard on all the songs. Rooted in the death metal pillars of original formulas but most definitely adding their own flovor to make their own brew of catchy and moving composition. Songs like "Atlantis of the Sands", "Rebirth of the Overthrown" and "Primordial Entity"
are amongst favorites from this release. Crushing drums with blistering double bass kicks and huge guitar tone bringing all together in a devastating package.

In conclusion, the band unleashes a crushing blow with every song. Each one building higher and higher making your blood start pumping. A must for any death metal fan who wants something brutal and well executed.

Chicago Domination Fest 4 Interview Full transcription

Welcome, Miguel Goregrinder of Chicago Domination Fest. Give us a
short summary of where CDF began?

It began just a couple of short years ago but, its origins go back to another festival I use to run called Chicago Metal Devastation that ran from 2005 to 2007. It was more of a local, smaller festival that had bigger plans and just never really got traction. I stepped away for a couple years from the fest scene to think things over and figure out what you really wanted to do with this whole thing. Then, I was sitting around working out a festival flyer that was meant to be a complete joke, I put on all these ridiculous bands, kind of a dream line up if you will and from there I put it up on Facebook and it got ridiculous reaction to the whole thing which blew me away. I seriously considered giving fest thing another try, so the first year, I wanted to put together something small, but still going to make a big impact. That's how CDF one began. I went out and found myself really bad ass bands and that's been the whole mythos behind this thing, all about quality over quantity.

What is the biggest challenge of putting on a fest of this magnitude?

There's crazy amount of planning that goes into this whole thing, usually a process
that can take literally a whole year. There's a lot of things to consider, financially, you know you have a certain budget that you have to stay within to ensure that you don't get yourself into any unnecessary issues, one of them is not being able to cover the festival end of things with ticket sales, that's the concern obviously as much as I want to take this to the next level and really grow it out and just make it as big as it possibly can be, there are certain limitations that I have to work within to really keep it grounded and still make it fun for everybody.

What was the highlight of last year's event?

Well for me, personally the biggest highlight was not necessarily the show itself but more the metal family atmosphere that really came together at that show, I mean there were people from all over the world that came up to see this festival and to me that was the biggest gratitude that I can ask for is to have hundreds of people there that I
knew in some way, shape or form and everybody's just having a great time.

Named some of the colleagues, sponsors or vendors for this year's festivities?

My main partner in the festival his name is Jesse Denton. He has been working with me since last year and he is bringing different flavor to the table as far a bands. When it comes to the amount of work that the gets put up by me, so he helps out a lot with the day-to-day stuff and getting us out to a wider audience. As far as the actual sponsors and things like
that, we have Two Brothers Brewing coming back to this year, (nice! I remember them from last year) yeah you know that I'm not really sure to what extent they're going to be involved to be honest but, last year they provided a whole bunch of free beer for
the bands (so, the beer will be flowing for sure, haha!) sure and then of course we got the
cruelty cabinets going to be one of our main sponsors once again they're going
to be providing all the basic guitar cabinets for all bands to use throughout the festival.
We are looking forward to getting some more sponsors on board eventually, you but it's going to be a step-by-step process to eventually get there.

How have the fans responded to this venue, (The Wire) compared to the previous locations?

Nothing but great things, everybody that got a chance to talk to, during
the fest last year was blown away by the professionalism of The Wire, everything
ran smooth. The staff that was there handled it with their A game.
They were just on top of it. When it comes to festivals like this, you usually you don't get that kind of treatment that this place provides. They're just really open and receptive
to everything which is really cool and I look forward to continue working with them.

To help some of the people out and people are traveling from many parts of the world do you know what kind of hotels and accommodations are around the area for these folks in case you're looking for places to stay?

Not many unfortunately, there's really not a whole lot in the way of hotels right in front of the venue but, about 10 minutes away from the venue,  there's a Best Western which  kind of became more or less the unofficial hotel for the festival last year, that's were all the parties were happening. I expect that to be the same thing this year. I'm going to try to work out some sort of deal with the hotel to see if we can get some discount rates for
festival attendees and band members. We will release information that as we get closer to
the actual show date. Definitely pay attention to the Chicago Domination Fest facebook page and event-page. As soon as we have the information available, will definitely put that out there for the fans.

What are the advantages of booking bands a year in advance?

The advantages are that it literally takes a whole year to plan this whole thing out. As I mentioned before, it is just impossible to think that you would be able to book a festival of this level with only a couple months time. It would be something that
would probably end in disaster, if you get it too soon so, especially
when you're dealing with international bands, you have to really plan things far in advance
to make sure that it works out the way that you hoped. Even then hickups are normal bands wlll cancel and other mishaps will happen, but that's just part of the effort involved.

I noticed you decided to expand the fest to three days instead of the usual two days, is there reason for that?

Its just all about growth, realistically at the end of the day I want to take this festival to
the biggest and baddest point and I can take it within my limitations. Will I ever consider going four days? probably not and that's just ridiculous. I think three day format is probably where it's at and where it will stay for the future if we decide to continue to do them from here forward.

Now at this time, where can people purchase tickets for the event?

Tickets aren't available yet, we plan to have them available probably in about a
month or so. Right around February. Once we have all that information, our Facebook page is the most up-to-date source of information for tickets. We also sell tickets through
our Chicago Domination Fest big cartel page. You can also order tickets by going to the venue's website as well.

What will the price of the tickets be? is there going to be a special?

There's a couple price points. There are single day tickets, for $35 per
day,  if for whatever reason you're coming out only on Thursday that's just a twenty-dollar ticket.  We're going to have two day passes available for sixty dollars and then on
the standard three day pass is going to run $80 and then we're going to have a VIP
package which was really popular last year and sold out. That will be $110 but it includes all three days of the festival, plus you get a gigantic poster flag, regular size poster
and the official first t-shirt and the laminate that allows you to go anywhere you want in the venue, so it's a really cool deal, a lot of people have been really receptive towards that package and I'm sure it's going to sell out again real quick this year.

One last question for the interview for you? are there plans for Chicago Domination Fest Five?

We will see, it's just one of those things that I can only take a year at a time you know, I mean, in my mind I'm going to say that I have plans, I got bands in mind for the next one because it's getting crazy. When you're working on this level, bands from all over the globe just want to come out and play because they hear all these great things about the fest. There's plans for the future, whether they actually ended up happening or not depends on the success of this year.

Thanks for taking time for the interview.

Funeral Moth - Transience

Funeral Moth is a four piece band, members are Makoto Fujishima - Guitars, Vocals. Tomohiro Kanja - Guitars. Ryo Amamiya - Bass. Yuichiro Azegami - Drums. Music style is listed as, extreme doom. Band location, Tokyo/Kanagawa, Japan.

Transience album released on Weird Truth Productions March 13th 2016. Taking a slight break from all the death/black and grind promos recently sent to me, I come across some really good doom metal from Japan. Funeral Moth delivers some penetrating and haunting music with this second release. Only two tracks and they are very captivating. On long travels, I can lend my full attention and let the rhythms permeate inside my head. The first song "Transience" is about twenty one minutes long. Its journey begins with some simple an effective melodies and creeps along until bringing you to the brink of desolation. Coming from a background that is mostly death metal in the bands I perform in, I can only imaging the amount of concentration it must take to hold a melody or rhythm for such a long time. It is truly in its own realm and I can appreciate what these musicians do. Without a doubt the most captivating song for me is the second track "Lost", this one in particular,  is monumental. The arrangements lead the listeners through many realms and lead to a grand ending which really caught my ears by surprise. The strings, as you might expect, are very low tuned, adding that certain doom character that resonates constantly through out the menacing rhythms.

In conclusion, music that conjures up images of sorrow and desolation. Long and distant trips through dark corridors. The band lives up to the extreme mood and ambience of doom and the huanting feelings will be hard to remove once you experience this album.

Bustum - Demonolosophy

Bustum is a two piece band, members are Demoniac - guitars & bass guitar / Nicor - vocals & drums. Music style is listed as, Black metal. Band location, Osijek, Croatia.

Demonolosophy album released on Iron County Records March 10 2016. It will be out on tape including a bonus song and new front picture and layout via Hungarian Iron County Records limited to 250 copies. First 33 will have an extra slipcase and logo pin as "die hard” version. Upon receiving this, my initial thoughts were, crushing and destructive black metal, something that kicks you in the face from the very beginning. As I listen visions of maniacal monsters raising out of the dead and bottomless pit. Ten songs with excellent production and intense drum sound, it cuts through prominently. The massive waves of malevolence are defined in every track. A good example of its brutality would be the song "Mist of Solitude", it presents a twisted vision. The dark portals are opened wide and many beast are set loose upon an unsuspecting world above.

In conclusion, delivery of raw and intense sounds can be experienced in each song. The tape format is sure to please the true underground metalheads and something tangible to archive and add to their collection.

Bloodred - Nemesis

Bloodred is the sole project of Ron Merz and began in 2009. Music style is listed as, Epic Blackened Death. Band location, Oberstenfeld.

Nemesis album to be released on April 8th 2016. My initial thoughts, the sounds put forth are tremendous. The riffs are powerful and embodied the roots of Black/death metal in every passage. The drum performance on this recording is by Joris Nijenhuis, (Leaves ́ Eyes, Atrocity) and produced by Alexander Krull of Mastersound Studio. Comprised of eight songs, each producing savage brutality with high paced double kicks and aggressive blast/grind beats. A punishing work has being brought to life and it is bound to cause waves through out the underground metal world.

I spent some time getting familiar with each composition. The album fascinates me in its delivery and structure of each riff. The songs that absolutely crushed my skull would undoubtedly have to be "The Hail Storm", it comes at you with strong and relentless attack and its ending structure is sure to make you want to jump into the mosh pit. The song "Collateral Murder" is another high on my list, reminiscent of classic b/m like Bathory, Belphegore, Gorgoroth and Mayhem.

In conclusion, a full on assault of crushing and menacing black metal with creative guitar riffs that pack a lot of energy and create interesting hooks.

Magister Dixit - Opus Astral

Magister Dixit is a three piece band, members are W.Solstice, Strident S., Ekinox. Music style is listed as, Mystical Black metal. Band location, Laurentides.

Opus Astral album released on Scum Productions March 7, 2016. Pure darkness is unleashed. The roots of black metal are apparent. The music explores with different sounds giving it a sense of the astral ambiance they are projecting. The song "Hall of Pain", is malevolent in all its arrangements. It certainly has a way to bring chills down your spine and its cryptic melody becomes ingrained in you mind. Another track that is on a top level for me would be "Respirer la mort", the use of blast beats, slow keyboard and flute passages make it an interesting song to listen to and it certainly creates an atmosphere of cosmic journeys in distant lands. "Pulveryzator" is a reckoning force and should be played at a high volume. You will also hear a cover, "Elder God (kataklysm cover)", it is a good rendition of the song and it manifest in brutal form.

In conclusion, if you like black metal with plenty of eerie melodies and cosmic sounds, then look no further and support Magister Dixit.

Ofghost - The Awakening

Ofghost is a one piece band, members are Sami. Music style is listed as, DarkPrimitiveHybridMetalRockShit. Band location, Jyväskylä

The Awakening album self released on March 7 2016. As the month of March reaches its end, my ears get one final full assault. This promo landed in my inbox and it crushes. Upon listening to this manifestation, it begins unassuming, with a nice melody and then it erupts without warning. Intense and relentless are the first things that pop into my mind. In totality they offer us seven songs of raw, gritty and dark tones. The lyrics are not in English, so, I am making this review based solely on the music that is being presented. One of the tracks that stands out above the rest would be the song "LUONA POLTTAVAN JÄÄN", it begins with a chant and it slowly builds up into a feeling of rage and anger as if preparing for war. The music easily crosses the line between black and death metal with short melodic passages and aggressive vocals.

In conclusion, the level of intensity remains high through out this album. Brutal blast beats and grinds are exhibited and are executed in precise manner. Underground metal fans will be sure not to pass this up, you will not be dissapointed.

Corprophemia - Abhorrogenesis

Corprophemia is a four piece band, members are Vocals - Matt Kelly. Guitar - Franky D'Alimonte. Guitar - Mat Lemmon. Drums - Jason Longo. Music style is listed as, Technical Death Metal. Band location, Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Abhorrogenesis album released on CDN Records March 11, 2016. The heaviness coming from this release is over the top. Clever and potent samples on almost every track can be heard. The low tuned chords represented would make Meshuggah proud.

Eleven songs of menacing brutality. Very good production. Crushing hooks and memorable passages. Some of the more outstanding performances from this album for me, would be "Hour Of The Witch", "Divine Creation" and "Supreme Dark Covenant". Some of the influence that may be noted would be bands like, Kranium, Pathology, Kataplexy and Devourment. While there is no new ground breaking material, the music sets a high level of energy and is most certainly engaging on all levels of the genre.

In conclusion, music that will have you picking up pieces of your skull. The samples and catchy verses are in par with traditional death metal but they explore low tune dissonance that is embedded with more of todays prominent brutal death bands.

WODE - S/T

WODE is a three piece band, members are TH MC ET KS. Music style is listed as, Black Metal. Band location, Manchester.

S/T album to be released on Broken Limbs April 8th 2016. My initial impression is, the realms of darkness are completely explored on this album. The opening track draws you in and before you know it, you feel deep inside the catacombs. The song the sits more prominently in my head would be "Death's Edifice", it contains an eerie and haunting acoustic piece that is hard to resist, it leads the listener into a brutal and intense body of work reminiscent of bands like Mayhem, Gorgoroth and Bathory. "Trails Of Smoke", hits another high mark on my list. Powerful and engaging fills with strong tremolo guitar riffs. The song "Spectral Sun", starts out with a catchy intro that easily captivates the thoughts. A lot of attention to detail in most of these arrangements and the musical scope of dissonance is projected in full.

In conclusion, a brutal and devastating body of work. Creating a furious mindset and elevating the levels of adrenaline to a high peak.
