Infested Entrails - Defiling a Piece of the Deceased

Infested Entrails is a four piece death metal band from Australia, Orange (NSW), Coffs Harbour (NSW). Members are Lyndon Southwell - Guitar, Matt Frame - Guitar, Matthew Budge - Drums, Jordan Giblett - Vocals. Genre is described as Pure Australian Death Metal.

Defiling a Piece of the Deceased album released on September 8th 2014 through Grindhead Records. Solid and crushing production. Heavy distorted guitars tune down for maximum destruction. Drums are massive, some of the best bass kicks I have heard in a long time. Thunderous and powerful. Bass is trembling and malevolent. Vocals low guttural, aggressive with a mix of highs.

The album consist of ten songs. I banged my head to each track. It is hard to resist the the violence these songs emanate. Think of early Suffocation, Dismembered, Grave or Morbid Angel but with an edge of modern brutal dm riffing. I guess the most difficult part would be picking out which songs I enjoyed the most. Born With A Barbed Wire Cock, the title alone should enough to peak your interest. Catchy opening riff, solid verses and a wicked chorus. Firefight Sodomy, it is hard to deny the slam destructive nature of it, not overdone, just enough to make you break things. Woo there Lassie, beastiality? great title and lots of pig squeal vocal styles through out the majority of this composition. Recreational Vomit Facial, intense and completely devastating from start to finish.

In conclusion, a great debut album. A contender with most of the brutal death metal bands out there. I recommended for fans of Devourment, Abominable Putridity, old Cryptopsy, Aborted and Defeated Sanity. ~Artemortifica

Crucifyre - Black Magic Fire

Crucifyre is a five piece black metal band from Stockholm, Sweden. Members are Erik Sahlström -Vocals, Urban Skytt - Guitar, TG - Guitar, Henrik "Doltz" Nilsson - Bass, Yasin Hillborg - Drums.

Black Magic Fire album released on August 18th 2014 on Pulverized Records. Strong production quality. Guitars have great distortion and tone, they come through in a massive way in my speakers. Bass is strong and punchy. Drums sound great. Every part is well thought out and all the cymbal hits and bass drum kicks upfront and clear.

The album consist of ten tracks. The band puts different touches of metal genres in each track. Rooted in heavy metal then some black, thrash, death and melodic pieces as well. You can literally bang your head to every song on this album. I'll be gladly adding this one to my collection. Some killer guitar solos through out this album, lots of trade offs between the two guitarist, it's a pleasure to listen to. If I had to pick out a favorite song from this release I would have to say Funeral Pyre, easy to follow, lyrics are great. One of the things the makes this track memorable is the parts towards the end of the song, haunting and memorable riffing with killer tom rolls on the drums, its captivating and brutal. It reminds me of early Samael. The ending song, One and One is One, catchy verses and chorus lines, I can see this one being a fan favorite. Rooted in heavy metal and an overall jammin track, I played this one several times.

In conclusion, a great album to play at high volume drinking beers while riding 100 mph on the highway. I recommended for both old school death metal heads and for the new generation of dm/bm listeners. ~Artemortifica

Violent hammer - More Victims (demo)

Violent Hammer is a five piece dm band from Kuusamo, Finland. Members are Lauri Autioniemi-Bass, Kalle Salmivaara-Drums, Janne Karjalainen-Guitars, Lasse Limma-Guitars, Joonas Niemeläinen-Vocals. Genre is described as primitive death metal hammering.

More Victims, this demo will be self released on cassette on January 21st 2015. The production is not the best being that it is a demo. Raw guitar tone, gritty drum sound, loud vocals. The volume was so loud I had to turn down my speakers a bit. My first thought is, this is some extreme blackened death metal. Almost reminiscent of early mayhem or Sodom. fast and grinding guitars with blistering blast beats. hellish screams are everywhere. there are also old school thrash elements. The demo is like traveling through ravaged and battle torn lands. Exploring all the content, there were a few stand out songs. Life After Nuclear Genocide, I like entire track, explosive verses, wicked chorus. There are some crazy Kerry King style solos that caught my attention. Extinction (Nuclear War) is a savage attack without letting up, I found myself moving my head several times to this song.

In conclusion, for being a demo, it packs a punch. Stripped to the bone. Full aggression and destructive spine shaking vocals. Die-hards will not mind its raw nature. ~Artemortifica

Winds Of Genocide - Usurping The Throne of Disease

Winds Of Genocide is a five piece band from Durham City. Members are Kat Shevil- Vocals, Linus-Guitar, Glynn Hall-Guitar, Dan Hughes-Bass, Ian Hunter-Drums. Genre is described as death metal, crust d-beat and punk. They started as a group in 2006.

Usurping The Throne Of Disease album to be released on January 26th 2015 on Pulverised Records. The production of this album is raw and to the bone. Some songs sounded to me as if they were recorded live but that's just my best guess. Regardless, the brutality they are projecting comes through in its gritty sound. The guitar tone is dirty, aggressive and crosses between punk and black metal to death metal. The bass sounds good, it keeps a good balance in the mix. Drums have a live vibe to them and remind me of old Slayer or Motorhead albums. Vocals are raw death metal quality like early Napalm Death or Obituary.

There are nine tracks. Lyrical content as you might have guessed by the band name, war, horror, and pure devastation. One of the things that stood out as I listened, was the bass lines. Rather than just following the rhythm, the bass player does some wicked scale run downs which adds dimension and depth to the compositions. I can hear the punk rock influence in the songs Mass Graves Of The Innocent and Into The Darknesss of Eternal Nuclear Winter, both are great jams and will make you want to punch things. At times the band Venom comes to mind as an influence as well as Nuclear Assault. Millions Lie Slaughter is one of my favorites from this album, it has a thrash metal riffing style which catches my ears. Swathed By The Black Wings of Death is intense pure death metal. It batters senses and its over before you even know what hit you.

In conclusion, the songs keep a steady aggression from start to finish. Not complex, just straight forward brutality, in your face with intensity music. Its raw and ass kicking delivery is worth adding to your collection. ~Artemortifica

Soulgrinder Zine issue 1 review

Soulgrinder Zine issue one published by Paul Caravasi on 2014. Cover art as well as short comic strip and frames by Mortuus Art (Raul Fuentes). Daniel Thrash editing and Horror movie reviews by Kenneth Gallant.

Printed zines are a rare find these days. Among the few is Soulgrinder Zine. Classic black and white style with all the sick horror art frames and chock full of underground metal music. I had seen pictures posted on FB for sometime now of metal fans and bands holding copies of this zine and also very familiar with Mortuus artwork. Paul was gracious enough to send me a copy of issue one to check out. I read the entire thing cover to cover. Enjoying all the gory visuals and in depth interviews which I found very interesting. There's about fifthteen interviews, Faith of Fear, Tyrants Reign, Rigor Mortis, Explicit Hate, Hell:On and many others. The interview with the band Aftermath was great since I grew up in Chicago and clearly remember seeing their fliers around town. It was a pleasure to read about how that band got started. Phil Anselmo is also interviewed in this issue. I thought this interview would be several pages long considering how many of his live shows I attended, he always loves to talk the audience to death, but it was not, it was short and to the point. A very enjoyable read. The Wrath interview was also intriguing to me since they are another band from my neck of the woods. I like the way the zines layout is, interview then short advertisement promoting some sick underground labels and their bands. On top of all that there's a short comic strip "The Vinyl Killer" that caught my attention and was a nice touch to the entire experience. Several album reviews which include bands like Disfigurement, Evil Army, Dark Design, Death Toll Rising and a boat load of others. But wait, there's more. Horror movie reviews for the films Curse of Chucky, Lords of Salem and others. Plus a couple of live show reviews which include D.R.I.

In conclusion, the content is insightful, the layout is in true classic underground form. It is rare to find a quality printed zine like this. Underground thrash/death metal fans get a copy while you can. Issue two is out now and you will definitely want to obtain a copy of that one too. Desolate Shrine - The Heart of the Netherworld

Desolate Shrine is a three piece dm/bm band from Helsinki, Finland. The members are vague in the their description they are listed as L.L. - All instruments, M.T. - Vocals, R.S. - Vocals.

The Heart of the Netherworld album to be released on January 13th 2015 on Dark Descend Records. Great production. The drums are intense, brutal double kick drums. All the cymbal hits come thru with crystal clarity. Gritty distortion for the guitars and is a perfect fit in the mix. Bass sounds good although I prefer it to be more punchy but that's just my opinion. Vocals are killer and remind me of old Grave or Benediction.

The album is seven tracks of pure chaos and mayhem. The opening brings to mind Dario Argento horror films. The Black Fires of God sets the tone, it batters the senses in true dm form, just crushing and relentless. If Monstrosity and Behemoth had a baby, Desolate Shrine would be it. This is one of those albums that I truly enjoyed every single song. Its hard to pick a favorite. We Dawn A New is one of the most epic tracks on this album. It is close to fithteen minutes long and never gets boring. A journey to hell, desolate and tormented lands. The build up sucks you into the void without you realizing. The song Desolate Shrine has a catchy beginning with the bass and drums playing some solo for a few bars then transitioning into malevolent guitar riffs. The track Leviathan is another favorite. I can envision a beast rising from the dark depths and ravaging everything in site.

In conclusion, I will be adding this one to my collection, it has haunting melodies, brutal transitions and excellent riff arrangements. I recommend it for fans of Nile, Suffocation, Morbid Angel(early), Death and Monstrosity. ~Artemortifica

Ghoulgotha - The Deathmass Cloak

Ghoulgotha is a three piece band from San Diego CA. Members are; Sarantopoulos, Mann, and Koryn. Their genre is described as Unorthdoom, Unorthdeath. The band started in June 2012.

The Deathmass Cloak album to be released in January 13th 2015 under Dark Descent Records. In terms of production, overall good sound. Raw dirty distortion sound reminds me of early Entombed. Bass sounds good, all the string instruments are tune down very low giving it that sludgy doom metal feeling. Drums sound great, a solid performance. Every piece is clear and upfront. Double kicks are punchy and devastating, with the exception of the song Levitate Within The Curse which sounds like it was recorded at a different time than the rest of the tracks. Vocals have a strong reverb effect and remind me of the bands Gorefest, Morgoth and Gorguts.

The album is the first full length by the band and it is ten tracks in total. The majority of the compositions seemed to be influenced heavily by the early nineties death/doom style which I happen to be huge fan of. Cranking the volume through the entire album and finding the best tracks was difficult but I would have to say some of my favorites are Saturnal Rites, twisted and haunting opening riff. The low end rumbles thru the speakers with pure veracity. Citadel of heathen Flesh has some memorable passages and I like the steady double kick work the drummer exhibits on this particular song.

In conclusion, a wicked and tormented release. I recommend for both old school death/doom fans as well for the younger fresh listeners who want to experience low rumbling brutality. ~Artemortifica
