Larsen is streaming their new song "First Song"

Larsen is an Italian cult experimental band and they are streaming a song from their upcoming EP "Tiles" coming February 21st on Hypershape Records. Entitled "First Song". Read more about it below.

The promo states:
Today, Hypershape Records set February 21st as official release date for LARSEN’s new mini-album, “Tiles”, on vinyl and digital format.

"Tiles" is a new manifestation of the inimitable vision they've been unveiling since New York-born performer Little Annie joined the band.

Annie joined LARSEN in 2008 after seeing the band performing at an Austrian festival. She appeared on the following albums "La Fever Lit" and "Cool Cruel Mouth" (2008/ 2011) and the relative European tours.

"Tiles" follows up LARSEN's latest album, the fully instrumental "Of Grog Vim" (2016), and features four pieces on the edge between "song" and "orchestrated spoken words" marked by Annie's personal urban storytelling and vocals.

The first single, aptly titled "First Song", is now streaming on Bandcamp. Check it out HERE!

Little Annie comments:

"I live  in 3 times zones - and write in two - the then and the now. My work with my Italian brothers, LARSEN, whom I love dearly  by the way, is much the latter.  Life is lived in the lateral, despite the illusion of it being a path from point a to b in fact it is NOW - a thousand perceptions - that if we really consumed, really saw, well we’d all cut of an ear - death by sheer force of everything bring alive - so we  see tiny consumable bits, lest our hearts burst - The then only exists in the rear view mirror - there are times to do so, but not while driving. These pieces are notes, sketches from the highway".

"Tiles" has been engineered by LARSEN long time collaborators Marco Milanesio and Paul Beauchamp at O.F.F. Studio Torino in Italy. A deconstructed cover version of Lucio Battisti's "Don Giovanni" from the same sessions was featured on the Industrie Discografiche Lacerba tribute compilation "LB/R - La Bellezza Riunita".

LARSEN, active since 1995, has so far released 16 full length albums and 3 EPs ("Tiles" being the 4th) on record labels such as Important and Young God Records, has performed extensively in Europe, US and Canada and collaborated with musicians such as Michael Gira, Johann Johannsson, Z'EV, Nurse With Wound, Lustmord, Julia Kent, Baby Dee, Martin Bisi, Xiu Xiu... The band is currently at work on a new album.

Palace of Worms - The Ladder

Palace of Worms is a one piece band, Balan: all instruments/vocals. Music style is listed as, black metal. Band location, Oakland, Ca.

The Ladder album to be released on Broken Limbs April 8th 2016. My initial thoughts are dark and oppressive sounds. Conceived in the roots of black metal but exploring other worldly sonic escapes. With this release the band offers us seven songs of manic transcendence. The track "Strange Constellation", resonates in my head , like a swirling abyss, its draws you in and slowly builds up like a tangle web of misery. One of the things I enjoy the most are the sorrowful melodies, "Ephemeral Blues", is the best candidate for these intense feelings. It brings all the elements together perfectly. Beyond the regular black metal vocals, you can also hear low whispering type of chants which cause a haunting mood through out  the album.  

In conclusion, an ecliptic and potent album is unleashed. Many realms of tortured existence in an outer plane are realized.

Briargh - Eboros

Briargh is a one man band made up of, Dux Briargh - All instruments and vocals. Music style is listed as, Melancholic Black Metal. Band location, Spain.

Eboros album released on October 27th, 2015, Morbid Shrine Productions. The music comes through with pure aggression and savagery. Nothing is over-processed. A very natural sounding recording is captured. Interesting aspects of the arrangements is how well the two guitar tracks compliment each other and trade of rhythms. 

The song "Eboros - Epitome of Death", has a captive and creative keyboard piece along with female vocals complimented with a clean strumming guitar. A thing to note, these songs are all in spanish. It is the first time I have heard black metal with spanish lyrics, it fits well and adds a different dynamic to the album. 

The drums have a natural sound and it is actually good to hear how intense the string parts are pronounced with the relentless battery of blast beats. 
Final thoughts, if you want pure, abrasive and from deep in the underground metal music, then this is for you.

Sacrilegium - Angelus

Sacrilegium is a five piece band made up of, Armeus-Drums. Suclagus Guitars, Bass. Aleksandra Keyboards. Nantur Aldaron, Vocals. Music style is listed as, Pagan Black Metal. Band location, Wejherowo.

Angelus album released on Release on 28 December 2015 Pagan Records. The band has been bringing their brand of madness since 1994 when they released their demo Sleeptime. This promo contains six different versions of the song Angelus. I will have to say my favorite version is by Angelus (Remix by Echoes of Yul), it is the atmosphere and penetrating hypnosis the synths create that most capture my attention. At times it reminds me of a Silent Hill type of soundtrack. Haunting and enthralling. At the time of this review the band has currently released a full album entitled Anima Lucifera. Final thoughts, six renditions each with its own flavor.

Akhenaten - Incantations Through The Gates Of Irkalla

Akhenaten is a two piece band made up of, Jerred Houseman - All Music. S. Wyatt Houseman - All Vocals. Music style is listed as, Black/Death Metal with Middle Eastern Folk Influences. Band location, Manitou Springs, CO.

Incantations Through The Gates Of Irkalla album released on Satanath Records 20 December 2015. My first thoughts, this is a heavy drum oriented album. The arrangements are tribal and ambient, middle eastern style of music with black metal influence. Among all the musical landscapes the band projects on this release, my favorite would have to be "The Watchers", heavy guitar laced and ominous keyboard pieces. This particular track is entirely instrumental and creates an ecliptic feeling. Another strong composition on here would be ,"The Passage Through Flames", is a strong and memorable song worth spinning several times. There is a cover by Septic Flesh, fans of the band will be interested in checking out  the song "Anubis", found at the end of this album. A good rendition of this song, not building upon the original, but just adding their touch to the song.

Final thoughts, don't expect a lot of grinds or blast, the music creates tribal and ritualistic moods.

Ildverden - Temnich Chorna Jde Za Mnoyu

Ildverden is a one piece band made up of, Kvolkaldur - all instruments. Music style is listed as, Black Metal. Band location, Ukraine.

Temnich Chorna Jde Za Mnoyu album released on October 13 2015 Satanath Records. The deep catacombs of the Ukraine have opened up an sent forth an atrocious beast. Still breathing fire and wrecking chaos. Probably one of the most raw productions I have listen to since I did a review for a band called Mists of Poveglia from 2013. very similar in style both one man projects and very ambient and atmospheric. The drums remain in the background through out most of the songs. Guitars are set at a mid level distortion and many parts tremolo picking. The music is good but, I could not understand any of the lyrics at all because its in Ukranian. However, I can name the tracks I did enjoy "Temnich chorna yde za mnoyu", "Temna dalych zavikhryt', and the Satyricon cover "The Wolfpack", I also enjoyed the strange and invoking intros reminiscent of old horror films. 

Final thoughts, if you enjoy b/m that's from the deep caverns recorded with the bare necessities then this would be the perfect release for you.

Mussorgski - Creatio Cosmicam Beastie

Mussorgski is a one piece band consisting of Khorzon. Genre described as stellar ambient metal. Band origin Poland.

Creatio Cosmicam Beastie album to be released on Godz ov War / Third Eye Temple February 2016. Deep from the darkest corner of the underground comes this menacing opus of oppressed music. What is immediately apparent, is the synth and keyboards coming at you with clever and haunting melodies. One of the tracks that gives you the feeling of traveling through the vastness of space is "Implanted Consciousness", a great song with complex arrangements. "Key To The Universe is another gem worth investigating, interesting drum fills and gothic like vocals. In all eight tracks the most stand out to me would be "Paradisum", the main harmony is captivating and really grabbed my attention. It is haunting and will send shivers down your spine.

In conclusion, not your typical ambient metal. Endless blastbeats and some eloborate synth work with creative melodies, it is worth adding to your collection.
