Chaos Rising exclusive interview

1-Hello and welcome to Metal Music Midwest, first off, thanks for taking the time to do the interview, could you give our readers a brief description of the group? Where is the band from?

Stéphanie: Chaos Rising is an all-female international collaborative metal music project that I created in 2019. It’s an open project in constant evolution with women artists and musicians from all over the world. 35 women have collaborated on the 20 songs of our double album that will be released in October. We produce songs across metal subgenres. Recently new musicians have joined us and we continue working on new songs.

Catherine: I am in Switzerland (originally from the UK) and Stéphanie is in France, but we have members from eighteen countries and we are very proud that the project is so international.

2- "The Singles" is your latest album, how long did it take to write?

Stéphanie: The project started in 2019 and we released one new song each month. This was a very fast process, as different ‘teams’ of musicians were working on songs at the same time. We are mainly two guitarists (Catherine and I) who compose songs regularly, a third one (Barbara) writes songs occasionally. For the next album new musicians will join.

3- What musical influence inspires the band’s compositions?

Stéphanie: Many styles of metal music inspire the project compositions, we try to propose different metal sub genres (thrash, death, heavy metal, doom, industrial, melodic metal…) and gather a team of musicians interested or specialized in each style to work on songs. I mainly listen to thrash and death metal music but I can compose songs in other styles like heavy metal or Industrial as I have been listening to metal music for 30 years, go regularly to shows and have an idea now on how to make a song sound like a particular genre. But it will also depend on the musicians in each team.

Catherine: I also prefer the more ‘extreme’ styles of metal, and I joined Chaos Rising as a grindcore guitarist, I did not even plan to compose songs. But since I have some musical training (I was a classical pianist before) Stéphanie asked me to try writing some songs and I have really enjoyed the learning process each time.

4- Chaos Rising started in 2019, can you tell us how did you all meet?

Stéphanie: We did not meet for real, we use social media to communicate and sometimes a musician contacts us, or sometimes. I contact a musician when we plan to do a song in specific styles.

Catherine: We communicate by Telegram groups, and share our recordings and documents via a Google drive.

5- The new album title is "The Singles", can you give us details about the content?

Catherine: We did not write songs specifically for an album, that was not the original intention of the project. But many people asked us when our album would be coming out, and we decided that it would be a really cool and unique concept.

It is a double album featuring 20 songs; one ‘extreme’ metal side and one ‘melodic’. A multi-genre metal album like this is very unusual and showcases our range musicians. The artwork is designed by Tina Gruschwitz (who also plays bass and does video editing) and she has created a beautiful limited edition CD digipack. All the mixing and mastering is done by Stéphanie and we released independently of any label.

6- Each member of this project is part of another band? How do you maintain a good balance working together?

Stéphanie: For me it’s not easy to deal with everything as it requires a lot of work. Some musicians of the project only collaborate on one song, some others on a bit more, it’s not so much work for them as they just work on their own part on a song when we plan to release it.

Three of us (Tina, Catherine and I) work regularly on the project to make it continue and we also work with our own bands. In the project I have to compose songs, play bass or guitar or sing or write midi drums, record, mix all songs, edit videos, communicate with teams, find new musicians, deal with any kind of difficulty and find solutions… and I work on other bands at the same time.

Catherine:
For me the project is a wonderful opportunity because I have small children so it would be very difficult for me to be in a live, touring band. With Chaos Rising I can do everything from home. When we were releasing a song every month, it was amazing to build up that repertoire but ultimately too much pressure, especially for Stéphanie.
Now we have a more relaxed schedule, but it is very difficult to keep momentum going when everyone has their own projects.

7- Have you performed any shows in your area? if so, how receptive and supportive are the people to your music?

Stéphanie: We have not performed yet with Chaos Rising, it’s a special project that would require a unique type of organisation if we plan to do a show. We must think about it.

Catherine: Many people have asked us when we are going on tour? Maybe one day we can find a way to do it.

8- Are there any upcoming shows or tours you can tell us about?

Stéphanie : not yet 😄

9- Thanks for your participation, finally, what is the best way to get a hold of the band, in case someone wants to book or promote the band? Any final words?

Stéphanie : Our project is meant to support women in music, to show we can produce music by ourselves with the best quality we can, having no budget and recording by ourselves, at distance with very different material and means.

We all gather around our passion for metal music. Anyone who wants to support us can help to promote our work, spread it in media, pages, radios, and talk about it with friends.

We also try to give women who can’t (because of the country in which they live, their environment, social situation…), an opportunity to create and produce something, be part of an international project and show their skills. All musicians who want to join must have a good technical level (to record themselves, to play on the clic, to work independently) and invest in the project development in a collaborative way.
