Ghost in the Machine exclusive interview

1- Hello and welcome to Metal Music Midwest, first off, thanks for taking the time to do the interview, could you give our readers a brief description of the group?

Where is the band from?

HI! Thanks for the interview! Ghost in the Machine is a US band that creates what we call Rocktronica - high-energy expression of blending various genres with a Pop sensibility. Alternative and often experimental in nature, one can hear influences from Metal, Industrial, Rock, Electronica, Urban and more. The band was originally formed in Milwaukee WI USA in 1995. Around 2012, we took some time off and C4 relocated to Orlando FL USA. Since then, the band become mostly a studio project and we work remotely on the music.

2- "Journey to the Otherwise" is the band's 5th full album, how long did it take to write?

Our last album "Broken from Binary" was released in 2015. We took some time off to focus on our personal lives and then came back to Ghost in the Machine around 2017. The first song, "Cuts like a Knife", for Journey to the Otherwise was started in 2017. The last song, "Muevete" was written in early 2021. So roughly 5 years. We (clearly) took our time for this album. We wanted a different sound than we had in previous albums. We wrote the songs a bit different, worked with a vocal coach and updated our studio, amps, synths, etc. to achieve this.

3- What musical influence inspires the bands compositions?

Truthfully we're inspired by all different bands and styles now. Sometimes for their musical talents, other times for song's arrangement or instrumentation. We're quite open to inspiration. In our teen years, bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica had influenced us. Early Ghost in the Machine music was influenced a lot by Ministry, NIN, White Zombie, KMFDM, Fear Factory. Currently...really inspired by Polyphia, Bring me the Horizon, Author and Punisher.

4- The group started in 1995, can you tells us how did you all meet?

We were childhood friends. We had played together in a handful of rock and metal bands together before forming Ghost in the Machine.

5- The new album title is Journey to the Otherwise, can you give us details about the content and more in depth meaning to this title?

Journey to the Otherwise album is the concept of our musical evolution over the past decade. We wanted something that represented the journey that has transformed our music into what it is today. On the album cover, the beaten and weathered road, branded with the GITM skull logo, is the path through a mysterious, foreboding and unclear landscape. The landscape is not unlike the climate of the world in recent times - seemingly turned upside down with a pandemic and social and political insanity. Our (most forward) images feature looks of contemplation in response to the chaos and uncertainty. The "ghosts" further down the road visualize the musical expression of those deep thoughts and our foot steps through the past. The album title is a statement that the journey was through and to somewhere unexpected.

6- Each member of this project is part of another band, how do you maintain a good balance working together?

We do have some musical projects separately on the side of Ghost in the Machine. It really isn't an issue for us. We've been doing this forever and we have a great working musical relationship. We have agreed at times to take time off from Ghost in the Machine to pursue personal development. It isn't a problem at all.

7- Have you performed any shows in your area? if so, how receptive and supportive are the people to your music?

Since we live in on opposite sides of the country, we haven't done any shows in either area. Online I think reception is mixed. Some people I think struggle with our experimental approach of blending genres. But a lot of people are really supportive!

8- Are there any upcoming shows or tours you can tell us about?

No upcoming shows at the moment!

9- Thanks for your participation, finally, what is the best way to get a hold of the band, in case someone wants to book or promote the band?

Any final words?
