We Are To Blame exclusive interview

1- Hello and welcome to Metal Music Midwest, first off, thanks for taking the time to do the interview, could you give our readers a brief description of the group? Where is the band from?

Johan: “We Are To Blame” is a melodic metal band from Sweden. Fusing influences from progressive, power and melodic death metal together with pop vocals, with a strong focus on writing memorable songs.

2- Duality I is the band's debut EP, how long did it take to write?

Johan: Hard to say, but I would guess around 6 months maybe? We spent roughly 2 years before announcing the band in public, but that time included starting the band, recruiting members, working on name, visuals and everything else. Oh, and we recorded 2 EPs in that time.

3- What musical influence inspires the band’s compositions?

Johan: I take influence from a lot of things, places and people. But if i had to pick 3 artists or bands that influenced me the most, it would probably be Iron Maiden, In Flames and Evergrey.

Alice: The fact that I’m not a metal-person I do not have any influences in metal-music. My main musical influence is a Swedish poet and artist called Håkan Hellström. His music, his lyrics and his artistic side gives me so much inspiration for me in my own music. I’m not sure that you can hear that in our particular sound but he gives me inspiration to write from my heart, and to not be afraid of saying the things I want throughout our music.

4- The group started in 2020, can you tell us how did you all meet?

Johan: Alice responded to an ad in a regional Facebook group when I was searching for a pop vocalist for a metal project. Alice’s demos blew me away, and I spammed her until she said yes, haha!

I have known Urban since a few years back, we shared the stage with our old bands at times and I also mixed the debut album of his other band “Era of Ephemeris”.

5- The EP title is Duality I, can you give us details about the content and more in-depth meaning of this title?

Johan: The title refers to us, the world and everything that happens. There is more than black & white; there are more sides of every story, more than one perspective. On this EP, we wanted to illustrate someone that had lost everything, made all the wrong choices and paid the price.

6- Each member of this project is part of another band, how do you maintain a good balance working together?

Johan: For me, they are all different outlets; each band or project gives me something different, and everything I do evolves because of it. “We Are To Blame” is my child however, and is definitely my primary focus at the moment.

Alice: I have to agree with Johan. It doesn’t matter if I work with other projects or bands because they are all different from each other.

7- Have you performed any shows in your area? if so, how receptive and supportive are the people to your music?

Johan: We played live once in a regional radio competition, it was a good way for us to get some press when we released our first single. It was not a metal show by any means, but considering I think the reception was great.

8- Are there any upcoming shows or tours you can tell us about?

Johan: We are playing our first full show in December in Tromsö, Norway together with Madder Mortem and Dreamslain, and we are very excited about that. Nothing else is booked at this time, but if the right opportunity appears we will jump on it.

9- Thanks for your participation, finally, what is the best way to get a hold of the band, in case someone wants to book or promote the band?

Any final words?
