Antitheus exclusive interview and their album The Faults of Our Kind

1- Hello and welcome to Metal Music Midwest, first off, thanks for taking the time to do the interview, could you give our readers a brief description of Antitheus? Where is the band from?

Thanks for having us! We are a death metal band from Seattle, WA. We have myself (Martin McDonagh) that does the lyrics and vocals and Erick Goin that is primarily a guitarist but also took care of the other instruments on the album and mixed and mastered the whole thing.

2- The Faults of Our Kind is the band's debut album, how long did it take to write?

Some of the songs are much older, nearly 10 years old at this point. But when we came together to write the remainder of the album, I think it took maybe half a year for us. The longer parts came in the production side. Since it was just Erick handling it, and both of us being the perfectionists we are, there was a lot of tweaking that happened. At a certain point, we knew we just needed to release it, put it out into the world, and be able to learn from it but also start to move toward the next set of songs.

3- What musical influence inspires the band's compositions?

All types of metal music heavily inspire us. Whether it is melodic, symphonic, metalcore, death metal, thrash metal, black metal, slam, deathcore, or whatever. We have listened to a wide variety of music over the years and always find some way to incorporate it into our music. We love so many aspects of this genre that we really look to all of it for inspiration.

4- The group started in 2014, can you tell us details?

Sure! The group started back in the day as a group of friends with a passion for metal music that came together and wanted to play. We would play shows in our area which for us was a dream come true as teenagers. We eventually recorded a shorter EP that we never thought many people would listen to, but it was mostly for us to show our friends.

Now, we aim to always keep the same spirit of friends coming together to work on the music we love.

5- The new album title is The Faults of Our Kind, can you give us details about the content and more in-depth meaning of this title?

The Faults of Our Kind is really all about just that. It’s very observational in the way humanity lives, treats itself and the world around us, and ultimately deals with the consequences of our actions. Each song deals with it in part. It really goes through many scenarios of humans making a mistake and facing those decisions head-on. Writing a lot of this during the pandemic, it was hard to look inward as much when so much was happening outside, so it really took a more observational lens on what was (and is) happening around us.

6- Erick is part of another band, how do you maintain a good balance working together?

Erick and I are very close, so it’s always very easy for us to work together. I love everyone in his other band, we’re also very close. So it works well! I think they’re just different types of projects to work on, but both fulfilling in their own right.

7- Have you performed any shows in your area? if so, how receptive and supportive are the people to your music?

We have but it has been quite a long time. Everyone was always very receptive to our music. I think since we were much younger at the time it was generally more impressive, but people still seemed to connect with our music. A few of these songs existed during that time, so I think folks that knew us locally were excited about some of these songs finally being released in some format.&

8- Are there any upcoming shows or tours you can tell us about?

Not at the moment! I am excited about the opportunity to play songs from The Faults of Our Kind for people out there. I know some of them are going to work so well live since it’s a format we also definitely cater to in our music.

9- Thanks for your participation, finally, what is the best way to get a hold of the band, in case someone wants to book or promote the band? Any final words?

You can always reach out through our Facebook page or DM us on Instagram at @antitheusband. Feel free to send us an email as well at antitheusofficial@gmail.com. Otherwise, thanks again for having us and if you haven’t listened to The Faults of Our Kind, please go check it out!
