Self Deceiver exclusive interview
1- Hello and welcome to Metal Music Midwest, first off, thanks for taking the time to do the interview, could you give our readers a brief description of Self-Deceiver? Where is the band from?
2- Across the Styx is the band's debut full album, how long did it take to write?
Across The Styx was written over a period of approximately 10 years, starting in 2012 when we began rehearsing and composing the first songs, including the song that gives the album its title. The band has gone through several periods of inactivity and we have even moved to a different country. In 2020, we resumed the band and wrote, produced, and recorded the final album, which was released at the end of 2022.
3- What musical influence inspires the band's compositions?
Our music is the product of our musical tastes. We mainly listen to genres like black and death metal, but we also listen to thrash and even bands like Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. Our inspiration comes from each of these bands that we enjoy, but the main idea is to create an atmosphere or convey something through our music. That's a quality in which we're heavily inspired by black metal and melodic death metal.
4- The group started in 2012, can you tell us how did you all meet?
We've been friends since we started studying Electronic Engineering at the university in Bucaramanga, Colombia, our hometown. From the beginning, we became friends because of our shared love for metal, rock and beer. During many of those conversations while listening to music and drinking alcohol, the idea of playing together and forming a band was mentioned until it eventually materialized. We've been friends for almost 20 years, and from the beginning, Self-Deceiver was two piece.
5- The new album title is Across the Styx, can you give us details about the content and more in-depth meaning of this title?
The album contains seven songs that, given they were written at different moments in the band's history, have different atmospheres, styles, structures, and lyrical themes. Therefore, it's not a conceptual album. The title "Across The Styx" was inspired by the reading of Dante's Divine Comedy, where we tried to make a metaphor about the reality of Colombia at the time, using the book. "Across The Styx" is about those people (mostly politicians) who make others kill each other in their name and spread hatred, hiding behind a mask of a good leader who cares about people and the common good. These characters, upon reaching hell, will surely suffer at Styx, where they won't be able to hide behind their "good leader's" disguise.
6- Each member of this project is part of another band, how do you maintain a good balance working together?
Both of us are part of a Groove/Metal Core (maybe) band called In Veins, along with two other members. Sergio is a founding member of the band, and Jorge joined a few years later. We are clear about the separation and our responsibilities in both bands, ensuring that one does not interfere with the other and that we have clear dedications to each. Even Oscar, who recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered Across the Styx, is a member of In Veins.
7- Have you performed any shows in your area? if so, how receptive and supportive are the people to your music?
With Self-Deceiver, we haven't had the chance to play live yet, but we've been preparing to start playing shows in the first semester of 2023. We hope to catch the attention of some new fans when we do.
8- Are there any upcoming shows or tours you can tell us about?
At the moment, we have a show scheduled for July at a festival in Bogotá, and we have some offers that haven't materialized yet. As we said, we are preparing ourselves thoroughly to start our live performances with all the professionalism, and we hope that once we begin, people will like it, and maybe we will have the opportunity to play in different cities, and who knows, maybe different countries.
9- Thanks for your participation, finally, what is the best way to get a hold of the band, in case someone wants to book or promote the band? Any final words?
