Hellset exclusive interview and new release Global Warning
1- Hello and welcome to Metal Music Midwest, first off, thanks for taking the time to do the interview, could you give our readers a brief description of Hellset? Where is the band from?
Hello there and welcome. I'm also grateful for that opportunity.
Here's Sebastian 'MetalKing' Nawój, leader of Hellset band and guitarist. Our band counts 4 people: me, the guitarist. There is also: Jan 'Beliar' Hawajski - second guitarist and vocalist in one person,
Jagoda 'Haneryu' Piórkowska - bass guitarist (girl) and Mikołaj 'Miki' Piskorowski - the drummer. We are all from Poland, but we are open for worldwide audience.
That's hard question to be honest - if we consider that we've started writing with very first meeting of all band members I would say several months.
However this album in first was my own project and I've created some riffs and solos in 2019, however this stuff was patiently waiting, until I've gathered skilled enough people
in 2021 year. Most of songs had been written after band had started - songs created before Hellset existance were: 'Blindfolded', 'Supreme threat' and 'Revenge'.
However 'Supreme threat' was heavily changed since it's first version, so I should include that into band achievement.
3- What musical influence inspires the band's compositions?
For me, it's every song I've ever heard, but biggest influence on me had: Blind Guardian, Metallica and Running Death.
Our frontman is crazy about Children of Bodom and Death - I guess for sure those bands inspired him a lot.
Our bass guitarist is mostly inspired by: Skillet, Set it off, Egipt central, Kontrust, Enter shikari, Sabaton and Happysad - this is also Polish band, playing something similar to rock.
Drummer mentioned about Slipknot, Motörhead, Nirvana and Wu-Tang Clan - which isn't even metal band. However when I see how my band members rock, I'm thankful to all of their inspirations.
4- The group started in 2021, can you tell us details?
Hellset was born in 2021 year, when I've started to looking for band members for my (in that time) project. I've started to look for members. First member was another guitarist,
which didn't play on guitar at all so I told that I'm gonna teach him how to play. We had playing together for weeks, before I've found first bass player - he wasn't into metal genre, so he got out of band fast.
Another weeks have passed, and after that I've found actual band members which also like metal genre.
First months we were looking for idea to ourselves - I've shown my very own 3 songs (yes, you can find them on our recent album) so rest of members started to learn those songs. Also we tried to decide whether we covered some songs,
and if so, what we would choose. We were playing together in weekly basis meetings.
5- The new album title is Global Warning, can you give us details about the content and more in-depth meaning of this title?
Looking at music parts, this album is mix of fast-paced riffs, some aggressive solos, banger moments and soft parts of songs. It also includes one ballad.
When you look at the meaning, 'Global Warning' is about issues, which divide us, as society and how it's used to control masses.
Every song is dedicated to particular problem and gathered together those are (as name says) warning for humanity. Warning, which says: 'We are going into abyss.
Overcome differences and work together, or be sure that we are all going to die'.
Here is also meaning of every song in shortcut:
- 'Supreme Threat' is about unknown danger, which may destroy humanity in brief moment (i. e. supervolcano eruption or meteorite impact), so people should unite and try to create better world together;
- 'In hora mortis' is focused on religions, which nowadays are almost opposite to what it should be;
- 'Diagram' is extension of 'In hora mortis' and it details frauds of current system.
- 'Blindfolded' says about how people are enslaved by money;
- 'Darkness' is focused on mental disorders and about unawareness of that in society;
- 'Soulcold' points out of brutal unstoppable time, which devours everything and everyone;
- 'Revenge' tells what happens with someone blinded by anger and grief and how it may affect into others;
- 'Flying Beggars' is (as I used to call) 'open song' - it hasn't any particular meaning, every listener may fit one's meaning.
6- How do you maintain a good balance working together?
Everyone of us have their's own tasks which is performing very good at. For example:
I'm kind of 'manager' - I create and supervise songs creation, I'm dealing with live events, financial stuff etc. Beliar is our frontman and media person
- autographs, dealing with fans, social media and fame. Haneryu is our technician - she takes care on our equipment, amplifiers, guitars, guitar effects and on other aspects of musicians life.
Miki is assisting to each of us, when we need help. But it doesn't mean that we do not support ourselves with our duties - every member of band is involved into every activity.
Honesty and engagement is very important - without this two things I think it's impossible to cooperate.
7- Have you performed any shows in your area? if so, how receptive and supportive are the people to your music?
Yeah, we have played some gigs, even in different citites. Our very first gig had awesome audience - people were active, responding for our talk and gestures and after concert
we had meeting with all of them, signed sold CD's, made photos together, etc. That was fantastic. Next gig wasn't such successful, we were 'the stars of evening' but due to some
technical issues, we have started much too late and people were just tired after listening several bands before us. Anyway I believe that was just unfortunate case and shows will be only better.
8- Are there any upcoming shows or tours you can tell us about?
Right now we are playing 01.04 in our city - Rzeszów, but I guess just few people would be attracted to that. We are looking for chance to perform, aswell in country and abroad.
We get different news every day so we may arrive even to your city or on huge festivals dear reader, so stay tuned.
9- Thanks for your participation, finally, what is the best way to get a hold of the band, in case someone wants to book or promote the band? Any final words?
Hellset Bandcamp
No problem, I'm also glad you have shared some time for us. Personally I feel that I'm not experienced yet to respond for that question, so let's say: every way
of promotion, which works is good one. Doesn't really matter if you do that via live shows, social media communication or by record label. We are trying to promote ourselves
every way and I believe that Internet is awesome place for that. And as for final words: may metal music lead you through bright and dark moments of your life boys and girls,
you are the best!
