Exclusive interview with the band Patria

To my readers please give a warm welcome to the band Patria

1- Hello and welcome to Metal Music Midwest, first off, thanks for taking the time to do the interview, could you give our readers a brief description of the group?

Vulkan - Greetings to all and thank you for the opportunity to talk a little about our work. Well, PATRIA is a Brazilian band with 15 years of existence, 7 albums and dozens of other releases, including demos, splits and EP's. Essentially, PATRIA is a black metal band along the lines of what was done in Scandinavia in the 90s, but we allowed ourselves to bring not-so-usual elements to our music.

Where is the band from?

Vulkan - We are from the southern region of Brazil.

2- Hexerei is the band's 7th album, how long did it take to write?

Vulkan - Hexerei was an album that took about a year and a half to write, compose and record. The idea of making a new record came during the pandemic, when we were fed up with doing absolutely nothing.

3- What musical influence inspires the bands compositions?

Vulkan - Tricky question. When people ask about your influence, they usually expect you to answer something that you basically try to copy, and that's natural. I remember when I was a kid (living the period of teenage radicalism) and I read an interview with Dismember where they commented that they were influenced by RAMONES.

At the time I thought this was totally non sense, but as time went on I understood what they meant. Today I can say that we are influenced by good music, but we work as a "blender". Anything we throw in there will be processed and come out with the face of PATRIA, whether Darkthrone or Depeche Mode. We breathe music all the time. Logically, we absorb a lot of elements coming from sources that we don't even remember where they came from.

4- The group started in 2008, can you tells us how did you all meet?

Vulkan - Well, in 2008 Mantus moved from Rio de Janeiro to southern Brazil. Small town, small metal scene where everyone knows each other. One thing led to another when Mantus decided to put PATRIA into action.

5- The album title is Hexerei, can you give us details about the content and more in depth meaning to this title?

Vulkan - The lyrical concept behind Hexerei is quite intense. Hexerei is basically the German word for witchcraft. The album's lyrics go into a very primitive direction of worship devoid of gods or entities. It is basically man being the god of man and having to live with the true supreme forces that commands the universe around him, such as nature and his own feelings, from a very dark perspective.

6- Each member of this project is part of another band, how do you maintain a good balance working together?

Vulkan - It's not a big problem. Aligning our schedules is quite simple actually. From an identity point of view, PATRIA's music and work have well-defined lines, which do allow a lot of freedom but which also have their limits and we all know very well what those limits are (even without having ever documented it). When you put several people together, trying to express feelings through art through a single channel, without any kind of filter, it is quite natural that there will be a conflict of feelings in the result. That's what the limits we have with PATRIA are for.

7- Have you performed any shows in your area? if so, how receptive and supportive are the people to your music?

Vulkan - Over the years we've played a lot of shows and the reception is always positive. We're not a band that plays live very often, but we really love being on the road.

8- Are there any upcoming shows or tours you can tell us about?

Vulkan - Like I said, we're not a band that plays live very often. This is our choice as we always get gig offers. Living in a huge country like Brazil makes traveling to concerts very expensive and time-consuming, and we understand and accept that. For the moment, we have no shows scheduled or planned and only time will tell when the next one will be.

9- Thanks for your participation, finally, what is the best way to get a hold of the band, in case someone wants to book or promote the band?

Vulkan - Contact PATRIA via instagram or email and let's talk about it!!!

Any final words?

Vulkan - I just want to thank Metal Music Midwest and all the readers for the opportunity to talk. Listen to our new album - Hexerei, respect your mothers and try to stay out of the jail.
